Abstract
This case discusses US-based tech giant Google’s unique approach to employee learning and development through the Googler-to-Googler (G2G) training program and the success of this program. Rooted in Google's core principle of collaboration and continuous learning, G2G fostered a culture where employees were able to both mentor and learn from peers.
The G2G program was implemented in 2007, when Google’s team in Dublin, which had only a few trainers, began looking for suitable alternatives to teach hundreds of new personnel. The organization chose to involve more internal employees to commit a portion of their time to teaching and training the new hires. As a part of G2G, the senior employees shared their knowledge with the new employees, and continued to do so on-the-job. These sessions covered a wide range of topics, from technical skills to non-technical skills like soft skills. The training became successful and subsequently, the initiative was extended to all Google offices. The G2G training had a significant impact on employee engagement and performance, thereby building a learning culture and knowledge sharing in Google. Over the years, G2G gained huge popularity and it accounted for 80% of all the training programs in the company by 2023.
